How Amapiano Took Lagos Without Firing a Shot

Around 2022, every Lagos DJ set started developing the same shape: Afrobeats to warm up, and then, somewhere after midnight, the log drum dropped and the room changed. Amapiano did not ask for entry. It just moved in.

The log drum is the only argument a Lagos dance floor accepts without talking back.

Lagos producers did what Lagos always does with imports: refused to leave them alone. They sped it up, layered fuji ad-libs and street chants over it, and shipped it back out as something nobody in Pretoria would fully recognize.

The purists complained, the clubs did not. From rooftop lounges in Lekki to street carnivals in Agege, the sound flattened every class boundary the city spent decades building. For four minutes at a time, everybody is from the same Lagos.
